Setting up a Stellar wallet with a keystore file

For optimum security and ease of use we recommend that you store BRIL on a Stellar wallet through a Ledger hardware wallet. The instructions for installing a Stellar Ledger wallet are similar to installing other Ledger wallets and this can be done through the Ledger website as found here. If you have Stellar already installed on your Ledger then click here to proceed.

If you do not have a Ledger then you can follow our supported method to create a web based wallet through Stellarport.

Keystore Wallet Creation on Stellarport

This video will walk you through a step-by-step guide to creating a keystore wallet on Stellarport.io.

We have provided full instructions for setting up a Stellar wallet and adding a BRIL trustline using a keystore file on this page.  (It’s also possible do this using a secret key – we have provided instructions for this method here if you prefer to do it this way.)

Before completing the following steps please ensure you are using a computer you trust is secure on a connection you trust.  Avoid using public WiFi or shared WiFi unless you have taken necessary security precautions.  You will require two USB sticks to safely keep backups of you keystore file.

Instructions are as follows:

  1. Visit Stellarport.  Select “Generate Keystore File (Default)” as shown below, and then click “Next.”

  1. Enter a file name for your keystore file, in this case I have called it  “brilliance.” Add a strong password. Please ensure your screen is not view-able by anyone at this point. Store your password securely using a pen and paper, a device that never connects to the internet, or a USB stick. When done, click on “Download Keystore File.” Move your key store file from your downloads folder to a USB stick. Make a back up copy.

NOTE: Pinnacle support staff will never ask you for your password, and it should never be shared with anyone else either.  Anyone with access to your password can spend your funds.

When you are done check “yes”, then click “Next:”

3. You now need to log in. Click on “Log In”  in the top right corner. Click on upload, and select the key store file from its storage location. Enter your password and click on “Login.”

  1. In order for your Stellar wallet to be live and functional on the Stellar network it must be funded, to do this you must send XLM (its called STR on some exchanges, this is its old name.) We recommend sending a minimum of 5 XLM (STR) to the public key address. You public key is the string of letters and numbers shown at the top:

Once you have funded your wallet you will see your XLM balance by clicking on the “Balances” button on the left hand menu.

The next step details some methods to fund your Stellar Wallet.
